What to expect for your travel nurse interview

You applied for a job and got a phone call!

This is usually someone in a management or education position from the department you applied to at the facility you applied to. They will talk to you about the department as well as expectations of your work. They will also ask you some questions about yourself and have your resume informs of them so may want some clarifications on some points. Read below to gain some pointers on what you should do and ask!

What to ask in your phone interview? (Starting with what I think is most important)

– What is the nurse to patient ratio?
– What are your shift requirements? Weekends/holidays?
– What are your guaranteed hours? Is overtime available?
– Would you be doing any department floating or required on call shifts?
– Will you ever be required to be in charge or orient new staff? (I request to not do those things)
– What the patient population consists of?
– What charting system is used?
– Is there a specific scrub color?
– What does the orientation schedule look like?

What to emphasize about yourself

-What sets you apart from other travelers? Think about the answer to this one right now so you’re ready!
-Your stand out skills and impressive employment history
-What certifications have you earned?
-Make sure you state your flexibility with helping the department out

Do not ask about pay packages, those are covered by your travel agency.

DON’T FORGET the most important topics! Your requests!
If you have any important & necessary requests such as time off, set schedule, and start and end dates bring them up NOW! If you get the job offer bringing them up now to the hospitals hiring staff will give you the best chance to get these requirements written in your contract!

Then let your agency know you just interviewed!
